(tutorial and pattern) JCrew Knockoff: Stripe Relay Dress

Here is the second everyday dress pattern I made last week.
I LOVE how it turned out, and so does Emily.

When she saw it, her whole face lit up.  So fun.

I wish I could say that I designed it, but no, it is a knockoff of this dress from JCrew.
It was really fun and simple to sew, too.

....AND GUESS WHAT?
After researching for hours and hours (I don't have PhotoShop CS5), I finally figured out how to create a digital pattern PDF download for you!

It is only in size 5, but it would probably fit a 4 year old too.
With just minor adjustments, you could make it work for a 3 or 6-7 year old.  It is a shorter dress, made to go with leggings, so feel free to add some length to the hem if you choose.

Here is my pattern! (Scribd) or here (Google Docs)
(This is a proud moment for me...I feel so professional!)
:)

Want to make one?
Materials:
About a yard of wide knit fabric
interfacing for bow
1/4" elastic for waist
optional: elastic trim or binding knit

1. Print out pattern.  Piece together matching lines.  Here is the pattern map. (Scribd) or here (Google Docs)
2. Cut out your pattern pieces.
3. Get started:

  23. This is such a cute dress! I have a five year old, so the pattern is perfecto!!! Do you think a cotton frabric would work as well as a knit? I have some frabric that I'd love to use if possible. Thanks, can't wait to start this one!

    1. If you use a woven fabric, you would need some type of closure, in the neckline...like buttons or a zipper...

  25. Thank you for the pattern. I"m getting back into sewing after a 15 year hiatus and I thought this would be a great pattern to start with. I do have one question though - it looks like you used a serger machine for all the stitches? With knits will a regular machine work just as well?

    1. Yes, the best stitch is a very narrow zig zag stitch. I usually do a longer stitch (3-4) and a .5 zig zag width.
